Norris would be interesting to see. Those advanced stats would work much better with that than determining which player was more valuable to their team

Agreed, but still, a guy like Shea Weber won't have great possession because that's not his game, compared to a guy like Erik Karlsson.

It still would be easier to use stats to choose a clear Norris winner than using them to determine a Hart winner. The Hart trophy is one that stats are really only scratching the surface and its clearly an award that everyone will debate in most years. I wish Ryan would do Norris next and get deep into the analysis/stats.

I'm definitely curious as to what current Penguins stuff you can come up with haha

It'd be interesting to include a column of the Pearson/Lindsay winner. See what the Press, Ryan, and the players felt.

Sid absolutely carried the team last year. Too bad he appeared to be completely out of gas by the time the playoffs rolled around.

Im not so sure about that. Crosby and Getzlaf were playing the toughest competition night in and night out and still crushed the point totals and possession.
Thats not just being good that is pure value. Without them you have to use two different lines to take on that competition instead of one. That says a lot.

Also, the norris is so subjective I'm not sure it could actually be any more enlightening.

My fear now is that 87 and 71, relatively healthy last year, will get the injury bug again. Based on past history, they are about due

You'll never convince me 87 wasn't hurt last year. Never saw him play like that. No passion. No energy. Short shifts. Bad, lazy passes in abundance.

Could have been an injury. I believe it was fatigue more than injury.....JMO. Played more minutes than any other forward (plus Olympics) after not playing a full season in 3 years. I agree, I've never seen him consistently play like that. The difference in his play Pre and Post Olympic was shocking.

I'm tired of all this advanced stats crap! When I was playing as a kid and in high school no one gave 2 poops about fenclose or corsi ratings. Nobody cares or wants to read about this garbage. Can a guy play or can't he??? Nobody cared about Lemieux, Gretzky, or Orr's advanced stats! People are trying to get too involved with sports that they make up dumb stats like WAR in baseball and fenclose in hockey. Just watch the game and enjoy what you're seeing.

You'd have to think overall though, we have less injuries (man games lost) than last year. That was ridiculous!

So because you don't care, nobody else should?

I enjoy looking at things from multiple angles and aspects. For me, advanced stats are proving to be an interesting window into my favorite sport.

My suggestion for anybody that gets pissed off about blogs or columns on advanced stats is to not read blogs and columns about advanced stats.

Yeah I guess. But 87 and 71 didn't contribute much to the injury #'s. PLus, I always thought that was a bit overblown due to the fact 80 or so of those were for the backup goalie.

I just want one year where we go without no one being seriously injured. I've often wondered if there was something specific to Bylsma's system that caused the injury volume every frickin season. Or, perhaps, the team was, as HCMT would say, "soff".
